Shipwrecked VBS Volunteer Details

Get pumped for Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2018!
At Shipwrecked VBS kids will discover how Jesus rescues us through life's storms.

Q: When is VBS this year?
A: Monday July 9 - Friday July 13. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 8:30am each day. VBS is from 9 until NOON each day. Extra help will be needed Friday afternoon to clean up.

Q: Where do I report each day?
A: In the OLMC School Cafeteria. Volunteers, please use the side door entrance into the cafeteria. Our participants will enter through the front doors of the school.

Q: What volunteer opportunities are available?
A: Adult and Youth Volunteers are needed to serve as Station Leaders, Station Assistants, Crew Leaders and Crew Assistants. We also need a Nurse/EMT & help with Registration. If you can't help during the day, many behind the scenes opportunities exist!
A limited number of volunteer positions are available so, register early! If your plans change and you can no longer help, please let us know so we can notify folks on the waiting list.
Preference is given to returning volunteers and volunteers who can help ALL week! :)

Q: When is the Volunteer Training?
A: All Volunteers are expected to attend ONE training session. Please indicate which training you will attend on the Volunteer Registration form. Training will last about an hour.
Sunday, June 24 at 4:00pm (before the 5:00 Mass) in the Gathering Room
Monday, June 25 at 6:30pm in the Commons, near the kitchen

Q: When are the Decorating Days?
A: We will need many hands to transform the cafeteria into our SHIPWRECKED themed VBS location! No artist skills needed, just a willing attitude! Think of a "cool" atmosphere with mountain peaks, billows of snow, a base camp of tents and of course, mountain animals! Join us for an hour or all day!
Saturday, June 30, 9:00-2:00pm in OLMC School Cafeteria (Set design, build, paint)
Saturday, July 7, 9:00-2:00pm in OLMC School Cafeteria (Set Up, final decorating)
Cold drinks and Pizza included!

Q: What if I can't help the week of July 9-13?
A: There are many behind the scenes jobs that take place before VBS begins! If you have time to help with set up or Decorating Days, please e-mail Cristy Barton. We will also have a board in the Commons with donations needed to make our week a success, watch the parish bulletin for details.

Q: What are the expectation of volunteers?
A: All volunteers 18 years and older must complete a Screening One Background Check form (every five years) and have attended the VIRTUS Protecting God's Children workshop. The forms are available online and at the VBS training sessions.
Youth volunteers must attend one Volunteer Training and adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct. Youth volunteer positions fill up quickly!
Preference will be given to returning volunteers and volunteers who can help Monday through Friday.

Q: How can I obtain credit for my volunteer hours?
A: Volunteer Hours Letters will be available on Friday to all youth volunteers. Parents needing volunteer hours at OLMC School are encouraged to participate; we are happy to verify your hours too. :)

Q: What ages can volunteer at VBS?
A: All ages are encouraged to register! Adults are needed to serve as Registration Coordinator, Station Leaders & Crew Leaders. Rising 10-12 grade High School Students serve as Station Leaders & Crew Leaders. Rising 6-9 graders serve as Station Assistants & Assistant Crew Leaders.

Q: How do I know which position to sign up for at VBS?
A: A description of the various positions is listed below: Elementary Station Leaders, Elementary Crew Leaders and Preschool VBS. Please indicate your interest when registering. Your interest will be taken into consideration when scheduling volunteers however, we will place you where the need is greatest.


ELEMENTARY CREW LEADERS

Elementary Crew Leader (Adult or HS)
Description: Gear up and participate in fun activities while building relationships with a small group of elementary-age kids. (Who could say no to that?) All crews consist of MIXED-AGE kids. Travel through four Stations, plus the Tropical Treats, Cast Away Sing & Play and the Sail Away Send-off each day.
Skills: Attend Shipwrecked VBS each day. Arrive 30 minutes early to greet Crew members each day.Start your Adventure with a special staff training session. VIRTUS training is required for everyone over 18.

Elementary Assistant Crew Leader (MS or HS)
Description: Assist the Crew Leader with a small group of children. Travel with group through all Stations. Participate in activities too!
Skills: Excellent role model for children. Likes to have fun! Learn names of kids in small group. Assist children with activities. Start your adventure at a special staff training.

ELEMENTARY STATION LEADER POSITIONS for Adults and High School Youth

ADULTS (VIRTUS training required for everyone over 18.)

Tropical Treats Co-Leader (Adult)
Description: Use the Tropical Treats Leader Manual to gather all the food and kitchen supplies for the yummy, creative snacks. Coordinate to accommodate children with food allergies.Set up and clean up each day.
Skills: Guide kids as a different group of Crews makes the snacks each day-yes, they really can! Explain how the snack ties in with the day’s Bible Verse.

Decorations Coordinator (Adult)
Description: Assist our Artistic Director and create a fantastic cave perfect for our Decorating Places: Shipwrecked DVD walks you through everything!
Skills: If you are a creative soul that likes to supervise youth with paintbrushes, this job is for you!

Bible Discovery Leader (Adult)
Description: Transport kids back to Bible times in unforgettable ways! Use the One-of-a-Kind Bible Expeditions Leader Manual to gather supplies and props for each day’s Bible Adventure. Use the great decorating ideas to set up your area, gather supplies & recruit a “sidekick” or two to help out!
Skills: Lead children through incredible and interactive learning activities that make Bible stories come alive in four sessions of Bible Discovery each day.

First Aid (Certified Adult)
Description: Medical Professional: Physician, Nurse or EMT
Skills: Supervise safety of VBS participants and volunteers. Be available to assist in keeping everyone safe. Treat minor medical needs, allergies or any other health related concern.

Imagination Station Leader (Adult)
Description: Use the Imagination Station Leader Manual to gather supplies & try out the science experiments before each day’s Imagination Station.
Skills: Lead children through engaging science experiments, introduce a Saint each day & supervise activities.

KidVid Cinema Leader (Adult)
Description: Put on your "techie hat" and set up a projector and DVD player to show the special KidVid Stories DVD at four sessions each day.
Skills: Guide crews in thought-provoking experiences and heart-touching discussions. Introduce the Bible Memory Buddies each day!

Cast Away Sing & Play Director (Adult)
Description: Use the Cast Away Sing & Play Manual to gather supplies and become familiar with the Shipwrecked songs and motions. Practice the Sail Away Send-off script ahead of time, and recruit other Station Leaders and kids to be your assistants.
Skills: Lead kids in singing the 10 terrific Cast Away songs and motions each day. Be ready to lead Cast Away Send-off for the entire VBS.

Ship Rec Games Leader (Adult)
Description: Use the Ship Rec Leader Manual to gather supplies needed for fun games each day.
Skills: Guide children through fun games and supervise youth assistants. Be prepared to be active & be outside for most activities.

YOUTH (VIRTUS training required for everyone over 18.)
Start your adventure with a special staff training session.

Station Assistant (HS)
Description: Assist the Leader at one of our Elementary Stations: KidVid Cinema, Tropical Treats, Imagination Station, Ship Rec Games or Bible Adventures Skit Squad.
Skills: Assist Station Leader in setting up, cleaning up, organizing and decorating. Participate in the station activities and encourage kids. Be prepared to be active, a fantastic role model and help the leader in any way needed.

Technology Team (HS)
Description: Each day, prepare and run the music, DVD player and projector to use throughout the VBS day.
Skills: Understands how to work a CD player, DVD player, computer and projector. Able to take instruction quickly and follow a script. Must be able to be flexible if things go wrong. Take photos of kids and use special downloadable software to present photo presentation each day at Cast Away Send-off

Station Assistant (HS)
Description: Assist the Leader at one of our Elementary Stations: KidVid Cinema, Tropical Treats, Imagination Station, Ship Rec Games or Bible Adventures Skit Squad.
Skills: Assist Station Leader in setting up, cleaning up, organizing and decorating. Participate in the station activities and encourage kids. Be prepared to be active, a fantastic role model and help the leader in any way needed.

PRESCHOOL/KINDERGARTEN
STATION LEADERS & CREW LEADERS

Tide Pool Director (Adult)
Description: Lead an enthusiastic team of Crew Leaders who will guide preschoolers in awesome Bible-learning activities. Help train Preschool Station Leaders and Crew Leaders. Work with VBS Director to plan and set-up the Tide Pool.
Skills: Be available each day to oversee, encourage, and pitch in where needed to help preschoolers learn that Jesus loves them- no matter what!

Preschool Bible Adventures & Missions Leader (Adult)
Description: Using the Bible Adventures Leader Manual, collect supplies and props and lead kids in one session of Exploration Station, Bible Adventures, and Closing Circle activities each day. Help preschoolers get excited about helping kids & their families around the world through the Connecting Kids to Justice project.
Skills: Lead children through incredible and interactive learning activities that make Bible stories come alive!

Preschool Crew Leader (Adult)
Description:Lead a small group of Pre-K and K kids to their own stations at the Tide Pool.
Skills: Arrive 20 minutes early to greet children in your crew. Gear up and participate in fun activities while guiding a group of young kids in activities connecting Bible truths to their own life.

YOUTH (VIRTUS training required for everyone over 18.)

Preschool Craft & Play Station Leader (HS)
Description: Check out all the fun crafts in the Leader Manual and gather supplies. Every craft has a connection to the day's Bible story!
Skills: Are you super organized and want to take on a lead position? Then you'll love trying out activities ahead of time and leading kids in the cool Craft & Play activities each day.

Preschool Games Leader (HS)
Description: Check out all the fun game options in the Leader Manual and gather supplies. Every game has a connection to the day's Bible story!
Skills: Do you have a lot of energy and want to take on a lead position? Then you'll love leading preschoolers in the games each day.

Preschool KidVid Cinema Leader (HS)
Description: Use the TV to show the real-life adventures of kids on the KidVid DVD each day. Every movie has a connection to the day's Bible story!
Skills: Are you a "techie" and want to take on a lead position? Then you'll love operating the TV/DVD player as you show the KidVid Stories each day. You will help preschoolers understand that Jesus loves us through every "adventure" we face in our lives.

Preschool Station Assistant (MS)
Description: Help with fun at Craft & Play, Games or KidVid Stations! Help with gathering supplies and set up each day.
Skills: You'll enjoy the one-of-a-kind crafts, experiments and videos as much as the kids do!

Preschool Crew Assistant (MS)
Description: Assist the Preschool Crew Leader in guiding small group of Pre-K and K kids to stations.
Skills: Encourage kids, engage in activities and lead kids to connecting Bible truths to their own life.
